The Italian vineyard. Everyone knows it: it evokes renowned wines, such as Barolo or Chianti. For others, it brings to mind images of unpretentious Prosecco, or thirst-quenching Pinot Grigio.
Ultimately, we know Italian wine from both the lower and higher end of the price range. For neighbors and rivals in global wine production like ourselves in France, this is not much. Indeed, between these two price extremes, one finds a considerable diversity of sparkling, rosé, white, red, and sweet wines.
The Italian vineyard is of prodigious density, of a heterogeneity that we tend to largely underestimate.

We are all familiar with the wines of the "Old World" countries: France, Spain, and Italy. From the 1980s onward, the wines of the "New World" arrived: the USA, Argentina, Australia, and many others made a remarkable entry into the list of major wine producers, both in terms of quantity and quality.
But there is another category. From the 2010s onwards, we began to talk about the "New Old World." What does this oxymoron conceal? Quite simply, countries whose wine production is as old as Methuselah (literally!), but whose tumultuous history has meant that these wines have remained largely unknown until now.
